The John Wayne Airport is located in Southern California in the ever popular Orange County. General and commercial aviation services both utilize the runways at John Wayne Airport transporting travelers in and out of the Los Angeles and Orange County metropolitan regions. The airport was originally named the Orange County Airport, but was changed in 1979 to honor the famous American movie actor. In 2004 another name was put forth by Chris Norby, a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Norby was interested in changing the name to The O.C. Airport, John Wayne Field, after the hit television series The O.C. hit airwaves. This suggestion was greeted by a negative response, so the name remains dedicated to the American pop culture idol!
Eleven commercial and four commuter airlines serve the John Wayne Airport's one terminal. This terminal, named the F. Riley Terminal after a past County Supervisor, is sectioned into two concourses, A and B. A separate terminal serves the John Wayne Airport's general aviation sector. Commercial airlines available at John Wayne Airport include: Alaska Airlines, Aloha Airlines, America West, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Midwest Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.
A Brief History
The first airstrips at John Wayne Airport was built in 1923 after Eddie Martin founded a flying school. The first commercial drag strip on the site was built in 1950 and was christened the Santa Ana Drag. Flights were received every Sunday at the new airport, until it was forced to close in 1959 due to increased traffic. Remodeling projects have taken place at John Wayne airports in 1974, '80, '82 and '90, resulting in a cleaner, more modern terminal and airport facility.
