Phoenix Car Rentals and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

California

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is located on three miles east of the central business district of the City of Phoenix, making it easy to travel with your Phoenix car rental. This is Arizona’s main international airport and one of the largest facilities in the American southwest. It is the eighth busiest airport in the country, seeing over 41 million people in 2005.

The airport has been using its original name since 1935 when the private airport was bought by the city. In the 1950s there were four airlines servicing the area. Today, there are many more and it is a hub for US Airways and a focus city for Southwest Airlines.

Know where to go

When you are traveling to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with your Phoenix car rental, you will want to know where to go. There are three terminals here, numbered 2, 3, and 4. Terminal 1, which was the original 1952 terminal, was torn down in 1990 and the airport did not want to renumber the other terminals because people were used to them. Instead, they call the number “retired”.

Terminal 2 is now the oldest terminal in the airport, dating to 1962. There are 16 gates here as well as the Red Carpet Club operated by United Airlines. The terminal services a number of airlines, if you are traveling here with your Phoenix car rental. They are: Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Continental Airlines, Great Lakes Airlines, and United Airlines.

Terminal 3 opened in 1979 and has 16 gates on two concourses. Also, Delta Air Lines operates the Crown Room Club in this terminal. Arriving with your Phoenix car rental, you will either be directed to the South or the North Concourse. Between the two, they service AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Midwest Airlines, Northwest Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines.

Terminal 4 is the newest terminal and it is named after Arizona Senator Barry M. Goldwater. There are 84 gates on seven concourses in this terminal, as well as three US Airways Clubs. Here with your Phoenix car rental you will find Aeromexico, ATA Airlines, British Airways, Southwest Airlines, US Airways, and WestJet.

Secure yourself

Sky Harbor has been at the forefront of airport security and was one of the first airports to use Backscatter X-ray technology that allows the screens to see if passengers are carrying hidden weapons through their clothes. This has caused some controversy because the cameras essentially show nude images of the passengers, but they were not made aware of it. This technology has been changed a bit to make the images look more cartoon-like, while still being able to identify any dangerous weapons.
