The Golden Acorn Casino has been called the "luckiest place on Earth". The land on which the casino is situated was once the land of the Kumeyaay Nation, stretching from San Diego country to the dunes of the Imperial Valley and south into Mexico. This was the most resistant tribe to the conversions by the Spanish priests that came to the area in the late 18th century. Following the 1821 Mexican revolution, California became part of Mexico and the government sought to end the Spanish system. Many of the ranchos and Indians were evicted or forced to work as laborers, resulting in a massive uprising by the Kumeyaay. By 1842, the warriors were attacking the last stronghold, the City of San Diego. The city avoided destruction by becoming part of the United States. When the area came under control of the United States, much of the land that belonged to the people was taken, and the Native Indians were put onto reserves. It wasn't until the Indian Self Determination Act was passed in 1975 that the tribes were given more authority over their affairs. Following that, the Campo people, descendents of the Kumeyaay who lived on the land, designated the area near the Crestwood freeway off-ramp for economic development. Eventually a casino was developed here, with the casino opening in August 2001.
