The Anaheim Ducks are a professional ice hockey team in the NHL. Formally called the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, you may want to catch a game with your Anaheim car rental while you are here in the winter.
Like a movie
The Ducks were founded in 1993, and, at the time, they were owned by the Walt Disney Corporation. The name came from the popular Disney movie at the time, The Mighty Ducks. The film was about a group of teens who turn their loosing hockey team into a winning one. Disney had the idea to cross promote the film and its merchandise with the hockey team and its merchandise. In fact, Disney wanted to have the word "mighty" before the players' last names on the jerseys, but there was a lot of negative backlash to this idea.
With the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, the Mighty Ducks picked Paul Kariya who was fourth overall. Kariya quickly became a fan-favorite and took the Ducks to one game away from the Stanley Cup in 2003. You can't see him today when you see a game with your Anaheim car rental - he has moved to the Colorado Avalanche. The team acquired Sergei Fedorov and Vaclav Prospal, but the 2004 season was a major disappointment for the Ducks and attendance dropped dramatically.
In 2004, Disney tried to sell the team during the lockout, but received a very low offer. Disney did finally sell the team in 2005 to Broadcom co-founder Henry Samueli. He pledged to keep the team in Anaheim. Today you can still catch them in the city with your Anaheim car rental.
A change of dress
The Mighty Ducks have had numerous jersey overhauls over the years. In 1996 a new jersey was created from jade with eggplant and white stripes. The logo was the team mascot Wildwing wearing a jersey and breaking through a sheet of ice. Fans did not really like the jersey.
Once again in 1998 the jersey was changed. It was a jade-coloured jersey with silver and eggplant. Again the Might Duck logo was at the center. There was very little difference between this and the previous jersey, and once again it was retired.
In 2004 the jersey was black with purple and grey stripes at the waist and on the sleeves. It had the alternate script logo of the present Mighty Ducks and old-style laces at the neck. This was a hit among fans and replaced the eggplant and jade jersey. This is what you can expect to see when you come with your Anaheim car rental. It is rare that a hockey team would have so many alternatives as Anaheim does.
